Mekong Delta Boat & Bike Tour — Cai Be - Tan Phong Island & Ancient House

Duration

1 Day

Tour Type

Countryside & Rural Life

Location

Southern Vietnam

A full day on the water and on two wheels, deep in the Mekong Delta. This boat-and-bike tour takes you past the remnants of Cai Be's legendary floating market, onto the quiet fruit orchards of Tan Phong Island, into a century-old traditional house, and through a hands-on cooking class in a garden kitchen — all before cycling home through rice paddies and village paths as the afternoon light softens.

Most Mekong Delta tours follow the same route. This one doesn't.

This full-day tour takes you west along the Tien River to Cai Be — a market town in Tien Giang Province where a different, quieter version of Mekong life has been playing out for generations. The floating market here was once one of the most active wholesale trading points in the delta, where merchants sold fruit and vegetables directly from their boats. Today it's less frantic than it used to be, but the boats are still there, the fruit is still traded, and your guide knows which stories to tell about how it used to look. It's a glimpse of something slowly fading, and that makes it worth seeing. From Cai Be, the boat carries you to Tan Phong Island — a quiet sliver of land in the middle of the Tien River where fruit trees grow right to the water's edge and the main sounds are birds and oars. Here, the day opens up into its richest stretch: a local workshop where families have been making coconut candy and crispy rice popcorn by the same techniques for decades; a performance of southern Vietnamese folk music alongside a spread of just-picked tropical fruits; a sampan ride through the island's narrow canals under a canopy of water coconut palms. Then comes the cooking class — not a demonstration, but a real hands-on session in a garden kitchen where you learn to prepare authentic Vietnamese dishes alongside the family who lives there. Lunch is what you make, eaten at long tables in the shade. The afternoon takes you on two wheels. A flat bicycle route winds through Tan Phong's village paths, past fruit orchards, rice paddies, and family homes where daily life unfolds at the pace it has for centuries. The final stop before the boat back to Cai Be is Ba Kiet's Ancient House — a beautifully preserved traditional Vietnamese home that has stood for over 100 years, its wooden pillars, lacquered panels, and ancestor altars intact. Your guide will explain the architecture, the family history, and what this style of house meant in southern Vietnamese culture. The drive back to Ho Chi Minh City takes around 1.5 hours along the Trung Luong Expressway. You'll be back by early evening — with time for dinner and the kind of quiet satisfaction that comes from a day spent somewhere genuinely unhurried.
